The PW Group expanded into open cast mining in 1995 building on its base of more than 40 years of experience in earthmoving and quarrying. PW Limited made a large investment in PW Ghana Ltd enabling the latter to execute two large open cast mining contracts for Resolute Amansie at Obotan and for Satellite Goldfields at Wassa.
The Obotan mining contract was completed in 2003 with PW having moved a total of 22 million BCM of material (ore to the C.I.L. process plant and waste to a designated environmentally controlled area) from the main pit and a second remote pit 15km from the processing plant.
The Wassa project commenced in 1998 and included the mining and crusher feeding of oxide and fresh material from opencast pits. PW was contracted to move 27.5 million BCM of material on this project.
PW Mining was formed in 2002 to provide a dedicated mining sector company within the group.
It commenced operations at the Afrika Mashiriki gold mine in North Mara, Tanzania where PW would mine 5.4 million BCM of material per annum.
Mining was carried out at Bibiani, Ghana for Ashanti Goldfields during 2003 as well as for Wexford Goldfields in 2004 / 2005.
A cut back was performed for Gold Fields Ghana Ltd at their Tarkwa mine in 2006. Contract mining operations got underway in Burkina Faso for Etruscan Resources in 2007.
Strict safety standards and proper control of emissions are rigidly enforced in all mining operations. An extensive in-house maintenance facility is provided at each mine. The company's fleet includes 150 tonne CAT 785C, 100 tonne CAT 777D dump trucks matched with O&K RH170 and O&K RH120 excavators.
